CHIRSTMAS AND MODERN PUPULAR CUSTOM (21-27 Des)

Christmas is an annual moment celebrated on December, that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. In this special celebration, the Christian belief that the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament's Messianic prophecies was born to the Virgin Marry. The story of Christmas is based on the biblical story especially story of the Gospel’s author. Jesus was born to virgin Marry, assisted by her husband Joseph in Bethlehem.
According to popular tradition, the birth took place in a stable, surrounded by farms animals, though neither the stable nor the animals are specifically mentioned in the Biblical accounts. However, a manger is mentioned in Luke 2:7 where it states "She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." Shepherds from the fields surrounding Bethlehem were told of the birth by an angel, and were the first to see the child. Many Christians believe that the birth of Jesus fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament.
Although Christmas is a Christian faith ceremony, but it also widely celebrated by many non-Christians. We can see it in modern customs. In lately fact, there are popular modern customs when Christmas season or Christmas holiday comes, include gift-giving, Christmas song, greeting cards to the others, a special meal, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations like Christmas trees, stars and angel statue, Christmas lights, and the other nativity scenes. In addition, Father Christmas (usually known as Santa Claus) is a popular figure in many countries, with the bringing of gifts for children. Thus, all these customs show us that Christmas is celebrated in many ways, not for Christian only, but also for many non-Christians especially those who interested the art and custom nativity on the Christmas.
Furthermore, in other hand, Christmas can change economical situation. Christmas is typically the largest annual economic stimulus for many nations. Sales increase dramatically in almost all retail areas and shops introduce new products as people purchase gifts, decorations, and supplies. For example, in the Unite State (US), the "Christmas shopping season" generally starts earlier. They begin selling Christmas items as early as October. In most Western nations, Christmas the least active day of the year for business and commerce; almost all retail, commercial and institutional businesses are closed, and almost all industries cease activity (more than any other day of the year). One of economist’s analysis calculates that, despite increased overall spending, Christmas is a deadweight loss under orthodox microeconomic theory, due to the effect of gift-giving. This loss is calculated as the difference between what the gift giver spent on the item and what the gift receiver would have paid for the item. Many people find this time particularly stressful. As a remedy, and as a return to what they perceive as the root of Christmas.
Based on this reality, some questions appear as a pity feeling of this case. What the basic values we can learn from the Christmas celebration? What we should spend all lot of money just for material ornament to say welcome to our Lord Jesus? The Christian faith doesn’t teach and invite us to be consumptive and materialistic in welcoming Christmas. “Peace in heart peace on earth” is not merely classic term that always we heard on the Christmas season, but it is full of meaning. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward man.” The peace which had proclaimed by angels when Jesus was born, teach us as the Christian to offer it each other. Everybody can’t stop this amazing peace in his own body only. And next question is how can we offer the peace of Christmas to the other?
Look at the reality around us! The poverty is still mayor issue in our province. Many people still be short of material things that can’t support their life. We usually heard some testimony or comment whom talk about this province as poor province in our country. We can’t avoid speaking about this reality and must recognize it as a problem. In other hand, majority of persons in this province is Christians whom put their faith deeply to Jesus Christ. Christmas is the joy o world. Jesus comes with special mission to find out the poor and all those who was sick. That’s why, the light of Christmas is not limited on popular modern custom with all the scene nativity, Christmas ornament, Christmas trees, etc, but it also teach us to be care with the lack people. Christmas is not identical with a new and expensive clothes but it will be meaningful if we practically love and pay attention to all those who need a help. Happy Christmas to you all, peace in heart peace on earth!
